Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 22: It is with profound sorrow, the A&N Police Department announces the passing of one of its beloved Canine (K-9), Herman on 21/11/2024, due to age-related ailments. K-9 Herman, a courageous and dedicated Male Labrador, served the department and community with unwavering loyalty and bravery for 08 years. Owing to his advancing age and associated health issues, Herman was honorably retired from active duty on December 12, 2022, and spent his remaining days receiving care and comfort at the Police Dog Squad Unit.
Born on 02/01/2014, Dog Herman was purchased from M/S Bhogadi kennel, Secunderabad in the month of June 2014 and trained for detection of explosives from National Training Centre for Dogs, BSF Academy, Tekanpur, MP for a period of 07 months. After completing his training, Herman officially joined the Andaman and Nicobar Police Department in December 2014, where he served with distinction.
Trained in explosive detection, Herman played a vital role in ensuring security during the visits of VIPs and VVIPs to the islands. He was also a proud representative of the department in various events, including Passing out Parades, Republic Day celebrations, and Raising Day ceremonies. His sharp instincts and unwavering commitment contributed significantly to the resolution of many critical cases, earning his widespread respect and admiration from everyone.
Beyond his professional achievements, Herman held a special place in the hearts of the department’s officers and staff. Known for his gentle temperament and affectionate nature, he was not only a trusted partner but also a beloved companion.
In recognition of Herman’s exemplary service, the A&N Police Department held a wreath-laying and memorial ceremony on November 22, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the premises of Police Dog Squad Unit. The event provided an opportunity for the Police officers and staff to pay their respects and celebrate the life and service of this remarkable K-9. Mr. A. Koan, IPS, DIGP (Intelligence), and Mr. Vishesh Dhatterwal, Dy. SP (CID), led the tributes, honoring Herman’s dedicated service to the department and the community.
Herman’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of working alongside him. The A&N Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to Herman’s handlers, who cared for him with exceptional devotion and love.
