CHENNAI: The Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs of the Department of State invites applications from teachers for the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP). The ILEP provides international teachers with unique opportunities to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills and increase their knowledge about the United States.
The ILEP consists of a semester-long, non-degree, non-credit academic program at a U.S. University including seminars on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson-planning, and teaching strategies. Participants will audit two courses in the host university’s School or Department of Education and participate in a practicum in a U.S. secondary school near the host university.
All participants will also receive a technology allowance and instructional technology training. Cultural enrichment, mentoring, and support will be provided throughout the program. The ILEP will commence in January 2014 and conclude in May 2014. Upon returning home, ILEP alumni are eligible to apply for small grants for essential teaching materials, follow-on training for other teachers, collaborative projects between schools in their home country and the United States, and other activities that build on their U.S. experience.
Eligible applicants must: Be a full-time school teacher (6th to 12th grades) with five or more years of classroom experience in English, Math, Science and Social Studies; be citizens of and residents in India; live and teach in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and/or the Union Territories of Pondicherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands; have proficiency in written and spoken English with a PBT TOEFL score of 500 or higher (61 iBT). [TOEFL scores are not required at the time of application, if a candidate is short-listed for interview, USIEF will administer the TOEFL or an equivalent English proficiency exam.] Teachers who apply, must also continue teaching after the program is over.
