Port Blair, Jul 25: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Garacharma conducted a training programme on “Scientific tuber crops cultivation for higher productivity” at Chota Enaka, Kakana, Pilpillowand Vikas Nagar villages of Nancowry From 17th to 22nd July 2024.During the programme, Dr. I. Jaisankar, Senior Scientist (Ago forestry) explained about the use of multipurpose tree species for efficient resource utilization, conservation of endemic tuber diversity to mitigate the impact of climate change, scientific tuber crops cultivation, tuber crops based farming system, organic waste management and integrated pest and disease management in tuber crops. Mr. C Vinod Kumar. Asst. Director (Soil), Mr. M.K.Arsad, Mr. Mahammed Haneefa, Agriculture Department, Kamorta explained about the package of practices of potential tuber crops for a Tuhet garden. In total, 153 farmers from 4 villages participated in this series of awareness cum training programmes. Coconut climbing device, CIARI Dweep Micro, sweet potato sprouted cuttings, tapioca setts and spade were distributed to the farmers. The whole programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR CIARI.
