Port Blair, Oct 03: To enhance Fire Safety and Response capabilities within the community, A & N Fire Service has initiated a Scheme named ‘Fire Mitra’.
It aims to harness the potential of community members in assisting the Fire Service of A&N Islands, during Fire & Emergency situations.
By seeking the support of volunteers from amongst the Islanders, Fire Service aims to create a more resilient and responsive approach to firefighting and Disaster mitigation.
Considering the fact that the A&N Islands fall under Seismic Zone-V, which is prone to earthquakes, a Standardized Training module has been designed and these volunteers have been made familiar with the Basic knowledge and skills required to respond to the immediate needs of the area, during any Fire Incident, Disaster or Emergency situation.
167 Fire Mitras have been identified so far and ‘Fire Mitra Basic Training’ has been conducted by Fire Service Officers. The training focuses on survival, search and rescue, casualty handling and assistance in firefighting operations.
