Port Blair, Jan 16: Prof. Clare Anderson, Professor of History at the School of Historical Studies, University of Leicester, UK delivered a talk on the life of Maulvi Liyaquat Ali who was sent on transportation to the Andaman Islands in the aftermath of the Great Uprising of 1857.
Prof. Clare, well known author and researcher on the colonial period of India and a specialist on Andaman history told the story of Maulvi Liyaquat Ali who was one of the foremost freedom fighters of the First War of Indian Independence of 1857. Revealing some hitherto unknown facts about the life of the Maulvi she described how he saved and sheltered Amelia Bennett during the Mutiny, and her defence of the Maulvi when he was brought to trial in Allahabad. The talk was made interesting by a power point presentation showing some rare photographs. The talk was followed by a lively question and answer session. Apart from the students and staff of the departments of History, Political Science and English many elderly citizens of Port Blair also attended the lecture.
Earlier Dr. Iqbal Ahmad, Principal, JNRM welcomed Prof. Clare to JNRM. Mr. GVS Prasad, Assistant Professor, Department of History, JNRM spoke about the revival of interest in the study of history in both India and England. Ms Jochibed Vincent, Assistant Professor, Department of English proposed vote of thanks. The talk was coordinated by Mr. Francis Xavier, Head, Department of English.
