Port Blair, August 03: The residents and tourists in Baratang are facing severe communication disruptions as the BSNL towers in the region grapple with an inadequate battery backup system. The frequent power cuts in the area have crippled the tower’s ability to provide uninterrupted network connectivity, causing distress to both locals and tourists.
The lack of sufficient battery backup at the BSNL towers has led to frustrating experiences for subscribers. During power failures, the network becomes unavailable, leaving people unable to make calls or access the internet. This has become a major concern for the tourism sector in Baratang, with tour operators and guides unable to communicate effectively with their guests.
Expressing their grievances, a tour operator from Baratang Islands said that they have made numerous appeals to the Administration and BSNL regarding the network issues. However, their efforts have yielded little improvement, leading to tense situations and worries for tourists.
Mr. R Alager Swamy, the Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang, highlighted the significance of proper network connectivity in the region. The Baratang Islands and Nilambur jetty attract around 1000 people daily, connecting both districts. The dense population in the area and heavy tourist footfall during tourist season make mobile connectivity crucial for seamless communication. However, due to the lack of adequate battery backup during power cuts, people suffer from a lack of mobile network accessibility.
He emphasized the urgency of installing sufficient battery backup in the BSNL towers to ensure uninterrupted network connectivity during power cuts. Such a step would minimize the struggles faced by the residents and tourists, boosting communication and enhancing their overall experience. Currently, BSNL officials in the region were not available for comments on the matter.
