Port Blair, Jan 31: TheAndaman&NicobarIslandsarepronetoGeologicalandHydro-meteorological disasters and locatedin one of themost seismically active parts of the world and several great earthquakeshave occurred in the past. Andaman & NicobarIslands runs accurately parallel to the boundaryseparating the Australian and Eurasian plates intheIndianOceanthatarecontinuouslyjostlingwitheachother.Theseislandsaremostlysusceptibleto very highintensity ofseismicity and aspertheseismiczoningmapofIndiacontainedinIS1893–1984, these islands areclassifiedinseismicZone–V.
The A&N Administration in coordination with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is going to conduct UT/State Level Mock Exercise (ME) on Earthquake followed by Tsunami Disaster scenario which will be held in all Districts/Sub-Divisions/Tehsils/Islands in this UT proposed on 09.02.2023.
For smooth conduct of above proposed Mock Exercise, an orientation and coordination conference was held on 31.01.2023 in virtual mode conducted by Maj. Genl. Sudhir Bahl (Retd.), Sr. Consultant, NDMA, MHA, New Delhi which was chaired by Shri A.S.P.S. Ravi Prakash, IAS, Secretary (Disaster Management), A&N Administration on behalf of this Administration and also attended by Shri Nitin Shakya, Director (Disaster Management) alongwithother stakeholders viz. A & N Command, INCOIS, Indian Coast Guard (AN), 04th Bn NDRF Arrakkonam, CGM BSNL, all Deputy Commissioners and Nodal Officers of all Department/Stakeholders. The Sr. Consultant (NDMA) briefed about conduction & preparation of Mock Exercise at UT & District level and outlined modalities and preparation required for the proposed Mock Exercise. He also discussed on the overall Scenarios for the Mock Exercise, considering the vulnerability of this UT and also evaluated various scenarios/simulation expected in each District/Islands participating in the Mock Exercise in conjunction with the Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (UTDMA).
