Port Blair, Sept 30: Indian Journalists Union ( IJU) joined it’s offshore affiliate Andaman & Nicobar Media Federation ( ANMF) today to condemn brutal attacks on students of Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Port Blair.
In a press statement, the Secretary General, IJU said that the students submitted a memorandum to the Andaman & Nicobar administration and metthe Vice chancellor but no action was taken. They are left with nothing so they wereprotesting two days ago, but they were illegally detained. Water cannons and even teargas were used upon them to suppress their voices. Many students have been admitted tothe hospital with broken bones, lacerations, abrasion, and more importantly, mentaltrauma.
ANMF and IJU urged the A&N Administration to hold a press conference andby showing public accountability disclose to the public what action they have taken to savethe future of the students of DBRIT and also tell what has made the police to resort to suchbrutal action to suppress the legitimate agitation of the students.
The IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and IJUSecretary General , Vice President of International Federation of Journalists ( IFJ) ask theA&N administration to take the media and the public into confidence and bringaccountability and transparency in administration, hold an inquiry into the incident ofpolice’s brutality on peaceful student protesters.
