Port Blair, Jun 23: The residents of Car Nicobar Island have been witnessing shortage of fuel since last two weeks due to a delay in the arrival of the Cargo Vessel with fuel.
According to the residents of Car Nicobar, the petrol pump of the Island is now witnessing a huge rush and long queues, as people, desperate to get some fuel, are reaching in large numbers at the petrol pump and many of them are going back without fuel.
However, it was reported that the government departments have their own stock of diesel available.
The residents of Car Nicobar alleged that for the last three months the amount of fuel that is transported to the Island is not sufficient anyways and hence the entire development has resulted in the panic situation among the Islanders.
When Andaman Sheekha Daily contacted a senior staff of EHL, he informed that the fuel crisis is due to the non-availability of cargo ships as both the ships are in annual maintenance. It was also informed that one ship is out of dry dock but further maintenance works are required while the other ship is still in dry dock and that will take about one month to complete the maintenance works and resume normal service.
The officer further informed that the District Administration is reportedly making an alternative arrangement to transport 30KL of Petrol and 24 KL of Diesel in any next available Cargo Ship.
