Port Blair, Apr 08: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute has conducted a “Field day on High yielding pulses varieties of rice fallow under AICRP Seed (crop) project” at Garacharma farm of CIARI on 08th April 2022.
Pulses (mung and urd bean) are an important crop grown in rice fallow during rabi season in the A&N Islands. Improved varieties played a vital role in enhancing yield. In this regard, ICAR-CIARI has developed high-yielding varieties (five in mung and two in urd) for the Island conditions. These pulses varieties were demonstrated at Garacharma farm.
During the field day program, Dr. S. K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist & In-Charge of Social Science of ICAR-CIARI highlighted the importance of pulses in soil and human health.
Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Head, KVK, Sippighat advocated pulses cultivation in the islands. The improved high yielding CIARI varieties of mung and urd were described by Dr. P. K. Singh, Principal Scientist & Head of Division of FCIP, ICAR-CIARI., Dr. K. Venkatesan, Scientist briefed about the role and importance of quality seed in pulses production and Dr. N. Bommayasamy, SMS, KVK, Sipphighat facilitated the field visit of participants.
A total of 26 people comprising 5 females and 21 males from different parts of Guptapara, Manjeri and Chouldari villages appreciated the work of the scientific team and gave their preference to the best performing varieties in the category of both mung and urd during the programme for its upscaling. The programme was conducted under the plan and guidance of Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI.
