The existence of the community in the Islands dates back to 1922 when members of the community involved in the Khilafat movement were sentenced and deported for Kalapani to these Islands. The first batch of Prisoners had arrived in the Islands on 6th March 1922 and was imprisoned in the Cellular Jail.
Since then, more Mopla Prisoners were brought into the Islands. Post-independence, the community settled in the Islands and the present community members constitute the third and fourth generation descendants.
