Port Blair, Mar 23: In recent past Andaman Sheekha Daily had reported about fuel crisis at Little Andaman and Car Nicobar Islands, where, after a great deal of efforts the situation was brought under control but now Great Nicobar Island is facing shortage in fuel supply.
As per residents the petrol pump of Campbell Bay has been rationing fuel to the Islanders due to severe shortage of fuel in the Island.
This is sad to note that Southern Group of Islands are facing such issues frequently due to lack of planning from the site of responsible authorities. People living in remote Islands are already suffering from remoteness and isolation and adding to the plight, such shortages are making life difficult for many in the Southern Group of Islands.
When Andaman Sheekha contacted a senior officer at ANIDCO, he said that as on date, they have only 6-7 KL of petrol left at Campbell Bay.
Due to cyclonic weather, the ships MV Alberto and MV Chuglum carrying petrol and diesel couldn’t sail, therefore we have limited supply of petrol, he added.
“IOC is responsible for supply of petrol in Campbell Bay and we are regularly reminding them about the issue but even they can’t do anything due to the unavailability of ships. Tomorrow MV Alberto will sail for Campbell Bay with fuel. We have demanded only 40 KL of petrol from IOC but so far they have confirmed for 25 KL only. However, we have sufficient quantities of Diesel”, he added. He added that he is hopeful that the next ship namely MV Chuglum will be scheduled soon for Campbell Bay with fuel.
