Port Blair, Oct 10: Botanical Survey of India Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, Port Blair organized the campaign on 08.10.2021 to avoid the use of single use plastic. The campaign was inaugurated by the Head of Office, Dr. Lal Ji Singh. All the Scientists, officers and staffs of the regional centre actively participated. During the campaign plastic wastes were collected from Horticulture Road- Megapore Resort, command house, Phoenix Bay-Chatham sea shore road and later the same were handed over to the PBMC sanitation workers for disposal. In the concluding event officers and all the staff took pledge to avoid the use of single use plastic and to preserve the ecological balance.
Keeping view of socio-economy and in terms of ecological balance preventing environmental degradation, an invention of re-usable eco-friendly drinking straw made by the Regional Centre from the bamboo speciesattracts great attention. The straw is not only eco-friendly but also reusable and has great potential for export and taking up by the progressive farmers for their economic wellbeing. It has been registered with the Govt. of India for grant of patent by the Botanical Survey of India.
