Port Blair, Sept 10: Captain Meera hailing from Haddo, Port Blair recently being appointed as the Captain of a ship by Shipping Corporation of India, became the first lady from Andaman and Nicobar Islands to command a passenger ship.
Realizing the need of the situation, she sailed for Car Nicobar on her maiden voyage with M.V. Sentinel, which was not the first time she had faced a daunting challenge, not only she reached Car Nicobar safely but also berthed the ship without the assistance of pilot, in one of the most challenging harbours of these Islands.
On her arrival back to Port Blair she was also felicitated by the members of Ration Rasheed Foundation, Mr. Abdul Rasheed and Mr. Saikat Biswas for her accomplishment.
Captain Meera, a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Port Blair and an alumni of DBRAIT, Dollygunj, Port Blair has made all the Islanders proud with one of the most excellent examples of success. According to the International Maritime Organisation, at present, women only account for 2% of the World’s Seafarers and Captain Meera is one of them.
