Port Blair, Aug 20: The officials of Food Safety Department under District Administration, South Andaman in their continuous endeavor to ensure availability of safe, wholesome and hygienic food to the general public, today conducted fish testing drives at major fish markets in the town.
The service of Mobile Food Testing Laboratory was also utilized for the purpose. Rapid Fish Testing kits developed by ICAR-CIFT to detect the presence of chemical preservatives like ammonia and formalin etc. were used to detect the presence of chemical preservatives laced fishes. A total 62 fish samples were tested at Mohanpura, Junglighat, Shadipur and Bathu Basthi fish markets and all those fishes were found free from chemical preservatives.
The Food Safety Officers also sensitized the fish vendors of the markets regarding the ill effects of chemical preservatives on human health. They also explained in detail the procedures for obtaining online license/registration and other safety requirements as mandated under Food Safety & Standards Act’2006.
Further, all the licensed manufacturing, repacking, processing and slaughter units of A&N Islands are hereby directed to submit their annual return in the prescribed form (D-1) by 31st August 2021 through online https://foscos.fssai.gov.in failing which a penalty of `100/-(Rupees One Hundred Only) per day after 31st August 2021 shall be attracted.
