Port Blair, July 23: The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a massive mass movement that seeks to move towards a Clean India to ensure access to toilets and accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage and put the focus on sanitation. The Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, is implementing the flagship programme intending to cover the uncovered for assistance and sanction of IHHLs. The incentive amount provided under SBM(G) to Below Poverty Line (BPL)/identified APLs households is Rs.12,000 to construct one unit of IHHL.
Smt.Kanan Mistry, W/o Late M.N.Mistry, R/o LalPahar expressed her happiness, as she feels proud to be an owner of her IHHL. She says she and her family members had no other option but to take a lengthy walk to a field to answer nature’s call. The toilet has brought immense relief to needy people like us. The bathroom has also brought safety and security to the people who live near the dense forest with imminent danger to life from animals and poisonous insects.
In conclusion, the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) has impacted people’s lives in direct and indirect ways. While the immediate benefit manifests itself in the better health of residents, indirect gains are through community engagement and participation in clean India. The Directorateof RD, PRIs & ULBs has emphasised the need for scientific disposal of Solid and Liquid Waste for achieving the ODF+ status in the islands as mandated under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II.
