Port Blair, Mar 03: Plastic pollution is an ever-growing environmental issue. Estimates are that 13 million tonnes of plastics get dumped into the oceans every year. The plastic pollution problem is big menace problem to be solved by the individuals and must be addressed systemically.
Every year World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated on 15th March and this year’s theme focuses on ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’. The goal is to create awareness and engage consumers globally to adopt and promote more sustainable practices. Consumers are increasingly concerned about plastic pollution and already taking action. To tackle this, systemic marketplace change is required at all levels from governments, businesses etc. to make tackling of plastic pollution and sustainable consumption the easy choice for consumers. As a consumer we should not dispose the waste in improper manner, it should be properly segregated and disposed in a genuine manner. And also not to forget about respecting rights of the consumers.
The aim of #zerowasteislands is the utmost importance and the Directorate of RD is committed to it and is striving to achieve it.
To achieve the above, Cleanliness drive was organised at North Wandoor by the Directorate of RD in coordination with the NGO “With You”. The occasion was graced by Shri Vinay Kumar Jindal, Director RD. The participants of the drive were from “With You” team members along with the staffs of Gram Panchayat Wandoor. Around 42 bags that’s approx 300kg of wastes were collected in the drive. The only way to really make a difference is to stop plastics from entering the ocean in the first place by stemming the flow at its source.
