Port Blair, Feb 14: Former Adhyaksh of North and Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad, Mr. Dipankar Mistry has demanded allowing four convoys in Andaman Trunk Road as people of North Andaman region are suffering heavily due to reduction in number of ATR convoys since lockdowns.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. Mistry said that as the number of COVID-19 cases are negligible in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this is perhaps right time to allow four convoys, as it was allowed earlier.
Andaman Sheekha Daily, received several complaints from ATR commuters of North Andaman that earlier people of North Andaman used to travel in early morning 6.00 AM or 9.00 AM convoys of ATR, while travelling to North Andaman, so that they could reach North Andaman by evening or late evening.
But now the first convoy of ATR is at 10.00 AM and due to heavy rush, there is a delay in transfer of vehicles in Middle Strait and Humphery Strait, hence they reach North Andaman by late night, even if they avail 10.00 AM gate.
“Those who get permission to travel in 2.00 PM convoy they are forced to halt at Rangat or nearby areas for one night and reach North Andaman by next day. Many who do not halt at Middle Andaman, reach North Andaman only after midnight, which is not only dangerous but for very tiring journey,” said a commuter.
This is high time that the Administration allow four convoys in Andaman Trunk Road considering the hardship being faced by people of North Andaman.
