Port Blair, Jan 28: Badminton Association of Andaman & Nicobar Island (BAANI) organized “Republic Bharat Badminton Tournament” in commemoration of 72nd Republic Day at Dairy farm Badminton Court.
The tournament commenced from 23rd January, 2021 for the categories (i) Under 15(Singles & Doubles), (ii) Open (Doubles) and (iii) Veteran (Doubles)
In the finals played today, in the Veteran (doubles) YSajeevan & K L Manikandan defeated V Ranjit Kumar & Veeraiah while in the open(doubles) Uday Kumar & Vishal Kumar defeated Zanpear & Yousf .Earlier in the U-15 category,(Girls’ Singles) winner was Akshaya and runner up Swarupa while in U-15 (Boys Singles) winner was Ketan and runner up Tejesh. In the U-15 (Boys Doubles) winners were Tejesh & Charan and runners up Rehan and Ashok.
Mr. B S Singal, Director, Sports Authority of India was the Chief Guest and Mr. K Shankaran, Vice Principal (Retd.) was the Guest of Honour of the closing ceremony who gave away the prizes to the winners and runner ups. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Singal lauded the efforts of BAANI and observed that there is a great potential in the field of sports and Games in the island and there is no dearth of opportunities being provided by the government. “With the coordinated efforts of the associations and the administration, young talents of the islands could find could find their way to national and international arena,” he said.
