Port Blair, November 12: The former General Secretary, ANTCC, Mr. G Bhasker has urged the Lt Governor, Andaman, and the Nicobar Islands to allot a piece of land for Christian Graveyard. In a letter addressed to the Lt Governor, Mr. Bhasker stated that the Christian community in the Islands comprise almost 20% of the population and are appealing for another burial ground in and around the Port Blair area for a long time to ease the pressure on the present Graveyard.
“Present Graveyard, opposite to Netaji Stadium, is used even from the British period and does not have enough space for burial anymore, sometimes the bodies are buried one over the other,” said Mr. Bhasker.
He added that due to the stray dogs, decayed body parts could be seen most of the time lying on the ground during funeral services.
He further stated to the Lt Governor that many places have been identified for Graveyard sites that are the area behind Police Line/ ALWH Quarters, Corbyn’s Cove, and Mazar Pahad hilly land, Attam Pahad.
Therefore he requested the Lt Governor to constitute a committee under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, and allot the suitable a land for the Christian Graveyard within a limited time frame.
