Port Blair, Sept 29: Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, Member of Parliament, A&N Administration has requested the Secretary (Animal Husbandry), A&N Administration to set up a Model Goat Farm consisting at least 500 Nos. improved Goats at the existing Goat Farm, at Namunaghar village by expanding and developing the existing Goat Farm for distribution of Goat Kids of large scale which would benefit for the thousands of interested unemployed youths, house wives and farmers for their livelihood in wake of Covid-19 Pandemic. He also suggested to creation of advance treatment facilities for the pet animals by installing X-Ray and Ultrasound machines at Veterinary Hospital, Goal Ghar, Port Blair and ensure availability of medicines for the pet animals across A&N Islands.
He informed that in the wake of pandemic, many people have lost their livelihood and become unemployed who are turning to adopt Cattle Farming for livelihood. The livestock farmer’s unemployed youth and other interested persons who are willing to adopt Goatery as livelihood are getting various difficulties i.e. Good breeds of Goats are not easily available A & N Islands, Goats and Goat kids are not readily available for purchase and local Goats found in Islands are small size and hardly weight around 10Kgs whereas Department of Animal Husbandry rear some breed of Goats but it is very small in numbers and they are unable to meet the demand of public and due to this situation, many persons gets discouraged and unable to start Goatery for their livelihood.
He also further said that the Department of Animal Husbandry running two small Goat Farms ie one at South Andaman district, Dollygunj and other at Namunaghar farm. In Dollygunj, the land is limited whereas there is large land available with the department at Namunaghar, South Andaman. The building at Namunaghar Goats where maintained are very old which was said to be constructed during British time is in very pathetic condition. Hence, the present existing Goat Farm at Namunaghar needs to be expanded & modified by setting up of a “Model Goat Farm” consist of at least 500 Nos. of improved breeds of goats like Jamuna pari/Beetal or any hardly meat breed, so that the interested unemployed youth, farmers and other persons can get Goat Kid or adult stock rearing from such farm for their survival and start Goatery not only is South Andaman district but the entire A &N Islands will be benefited.
Hence, the Member of Parliament suggested the Animal Husbandry department to set up a Model Goat Farm consisting at least 500Nos. improved Goats at Namunaghar village by expanding and developing existing Goat Farm at the earliest for benefit of thousands of interested person.
In order to get advance treatment facilities for pet animals held by large number of peoples, the MP further suggested the department to install a X-Ray and Ultrasound machines at Veterinary Hospital, Goalghar, Port Blair and ensure availability of medicine across A&N Islands for pet animals.
