Shaheed Dweep, September 28: The farmers of Shaheed Dweep, South Andaman have sought an urgent need of Chemical Fertilizers, Pesticide, and high yielding seeds.
The demand was kept to the Lt Governor by the Ex-Upadhyaksh, South Andaman Zilla Parishad Mr. Sukumar Das, on behalf of the farmers of the Island.
In a letter addressed to the Lt Governor, Andaman, and the Nicobar Islands, Mr. Das stated that practicing organic farming has become an arduous task for the farmers of the Island because of delay in supply of organic manure and due to the lack of heed given by the experts of the Agricultural Department in the Island.
According to Mr. Das, the majority of residents of the Islands who relied upon tourism activities are already facing hardship following the closure of Tourism Activities due to the pandemic while on the other hand, those depend upon Agriculture for their bread and butter are facing troubles due to the non-availability of Chemical Fertilizers (Urea, DAP et cetera), pesticides, high yielding seeds, and organic manure,” Mr. Das stated.
Mr. Das further stated that due to the non-availability of organic manure, the farmers now are preferring to use chemical fertilizers and earn profits. “Hence, it is requested to allow the supply of chemical fertilizers in the region,” Mr. Das lastly added.
