Mayabunder, Sept 24: Travelling through Andaman Trunk Road has become a constant source of pain and anxiety for the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to reports many stretches of Andaman trunk road are in a horrible state giving nightmares to the ATR Commuters.
There are many stretches like, Ferrargunj to Jirkatang, Nilambur to Gandhi Ghat Jetty etc which are in horrible shape. In some places the reason for delay in completion of work is lethargic attitude of Contractor, while in some other stretches the delay is due to official reasons.
The worst condition of Andaman Trunk Road is perhaps between Pema Tikri, Tugapur and Basantipur areas of Middle Andaman. As per reports, this 12 KM ATR stretch falls under the deep forest area and due to objections from the Forest Department the work for upgradation of Andaman Trunk Road in this region was stopped after completing nearly 50% of works by the concerned contractor.
Now after several spells of heavy rain, this particular stretch of road is in such a pathetic shape that not only people are suffering heavily, vehicles are also getting damages.
When this matter was highlighted in front of the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, Dr. Angel Bhati Chauhan, she immediately contacted the Project Manager of NHIDCL in Andaman and also the Forest Officials. She assured that after taking up this matter with concern departments the matter will be resolved as soon as possible.
Public of North and Middle Andaman demand that the matter regardung huge delay in completion of upgradation of ATR and poor quality of work in some stretches must be highlighted with the concerned ministry officially, by the Administration on regular basis.
