Port Blair, Aug 27: Amidst reports of the spread of COVID19 infection among Great Andamanese Tribes, the Andaman Administration has now confirmed that nearly four of the Infected Tribes have now recovered and only four others are still in the Andaman’s COVID isolation ward.
Last week Andaman Sheekha reported in two different news reports that altogether 10 members of Great Andamanese Tribes were tested positive during three different occasions when large scale tests were conducted among them.
As the news of COVID19 infection among tribes has now created a global ripple the Health Department of Andaman and Nicobar Administration today said that only four members of Great Andamanese Tribes are presently admitted in COVID19 isolation wards of G B Pant Hospital, Port Blair while all others have been sent to Home Quarantine as per the existing protocol that people with no symptoms for 10 days are fit for home quarantine.
“Only four members of Great Andamanese Tribes are in hospital and they are doing well,” informed Mr. Avijit Roy, the Nodal Officer of COVID19 in Andaman.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Chetan Sanghi today tweeted that Primitive Vulnerable Tribes are all safe.
“Every precaution taken to protect this heritage of humanity. Rumours cause more damage than the Pandemic,” he added.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha the Secretary of Tribal Department of Andaman, Mr. Sanjiv Mittal today said that all Tribes members of Great Andamanese, who were tested positive are absolutely fit.
“Three to four people have already recovered. Many came to Port Blair because they have government jobs in Port Blair and many others for studies of their kids, that why they got infections. All precautions have been taken and now there is absolutely no problem,” Mr. Mittal added.
When asked about four tribal members who were tested positive at Strait Island, he clarified that now all of them have been brought to Port Blair and no one is in isolation at Strait Island, an Island which is earmarked for only Great Andamanese Tribes.
The Great Andamanese are an indigenous people of the Andaman Group of Islands. At present there are about 56 members of Great Andamanese Tribes alive and are living in the Andaman Islands other than these, there are nearly 18 other family members who are non-Tribals.
