
Port Blair, June 29: The Andaman & Nicobar State Cooperative Bank Employee Welfare Fund has introduced a free bus service for the daily commuting of its staff members in South Andaman district. This is the first bus service (free service) introduced in the Island by any bank for its staff members till date.
The Chairman of the bank, Mr. Bhagat Singh has flagged off the bus from its Head office premises on 29th June, 2020 at 12.30 noon in presence of Mr. K Murugan, Managing Director, senior officials and staffs.
The 42 seater TATA Marcopolo bus is also available for hiring purposes on rental basis for the Ceremonial function of staffs and their relatives, Departments, Public Institutions and Schools, Colleges and various other Educational Institutions at concessional discounted rates as compared to the present Market rates.
Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma, Member of Parliament, A&N Islands has requested Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands to consider for construction of transit accommodation /hostel for the construction labours out of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Fund.
The MP said that the Central Government in accordance with the power conferred under Section 60 of Building and Other Construction Workers Act 1996, has promulgated specific provision in regard to having transit accommodation/hostel/ labour shed/night shelter etc. for the construction labours under the title ‘Housing’ for Building and Other Construction Workers’.
In Andaman and Nicobar Islands as majority of building and other construction work are executed in and around the capital city of Port Blair, the construction workers not only from mainland but also residing in various Islands of our Union Territory come to Port Blair in search of job. Hence, in order to mitigate the hardship of the Building and Other Construction workers which they faces during their transit to Port Blair, the MP requested the Lt. Governor to consider for creation of transit accommodation/labour shed with facilities such as crèches, recreation hall, library etc. to the Building and Other Construction workers at Port Blair. For this purpose, he suggested that 340 sq. mtrs of land standing thereon very old structures in a dilapidated condition at Dairyfarm belonging to Labour department is lying vacant may be earmarked for construction of transit accommodation for the construction labours out of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Fund.
