Port Blair, June 23: After facing tremendous difficulties in catering the water needs of the residents of the Municipal area this season, the Chairperson Port Blair Municipal Council has accepted that PBMC must look for an alternate water source and they cannot rely only upon Dhanikhari Dam anymore.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Chairperson, PBMC, Mr. Udhaya Kumar said that this season after the water level in the Dhanikhari Dam went down, the Andaman Public Works Department gave up as a result of which the PBMC had to purchase water from other sources to cater the needs of the people.
“With the intention that such a kind of situation never occurs again in future, we have submitted various proposals to the Andaman Administration,” said Mr. Kumar.
Mr. Udhaya Kumar added that one such proposal is desalination project, we have kept that in the smart city project and are still behind the Andaman Administration for their acceptance. “We have also proposed the administration to increase the length of the Sweet water lakes and check dams in the region to tap more water,” Mr. Udhaya Kumar added.
The Chairperson PBMC also added that administration has also tendered and finalised the project for laying an underwater pipeline from Rut Island to Port Blair and once that project is completed the benefit of 05 Million liters water per day can be received.
