Port Blair, Feb 24: The Directorate of Shipping Service is making continuous efforts to bring awareness towards safe ship and safety of passengers. In such an effort the Directorate of Shipping recently in association with Port Management Board and Tourist Boat Operators of Baratang organized a mock drill on manoverboard at Baratang. In the above exercise, a scenario of few passengers overboard MV Lapathy, in the creek between Middle Strait and Nilambur (Baratang) Jetty was created. Subsequent to above created situation, Emergency Alarm was raised by the vessel and all immediate precautionary measures were taken by the vessel for the safety of the passengers onboard as well as overboard. Proper look out were posted to locate the drifting persons/passengers, and three rescue boats were rushed to the incident site from Nilambur Jetty. The person went overboard were successfully rescued by Rescue boat and after giving initial first aid, they immediately shifted to Nilambur Jetty. The entire exercise was closely monitored by Shri R Veeriah, Deputy Director (Shipping Services) and Shri Khudiram Mondal, IV Surveyor.
Later a Familiarization class for passengers regarding use of Life Saving Appliances and Fire Fighting Appliances was also carried out on board MV Lapathy at Baratang. In the familiarising class, Donning procedure of life jackets was demonstrated and a brief lecture regarding use of safety items on board was also delivered by Shri Aqeeb Azeem, Technical Superintendent, DSS.
Similarly health awareness workshop for the employees of Directorate of shipping Services was also conducted in Marine Dockyard of Directorate on 22.02.2020. In the above health awareness workshop, a lecture on healthy habit was delivered by Resource person from Directorate of Health Services.
