Port Blair, Aug 31: Soaring prices of commodities and food stuffs is making life difficult for people living in remote Car Nicobar Islands. According to reports available here people living in Car Nicobar are forced to pay heavy amount for every single commodity they buy from Car Nicobar Market.
According to sources, Chicken is available at Car Nicobar at Rs. 260 per kg (minimum) while fish is available at the rate of Rs. 160 per Kg. An egg is sold at the rate of Rs. 6.00 at Car Nicobar, making holes in the pocket of islanders living in Car Nicobar.
Worst sufferers are those low paid government servants, who are posted at Car Nicobar Islands and have to buy commodities and food stuffs in sky high price. Often essential commodities are sold in astronomical high rate.
Two years back, when Andaman Sheekha had reported about this issue and subsequently a clarification was seeked by the Raj Niwas, the then DC of Car Nicobar had replied that no such report had ever came into his knowledge.
“Top officers never come and check, what is happening in ground. Probably they get their cut on time. It’s difficult for DRMs and other low paid employees to survive here and also to run a family at Port Blair,” said a government servant, who doesn’t want his name to be quoted.
The Administration is indiscriminately transferring government servants to remote and difficult Islands but sadly Administration neither provide better infrastructure for them nor take any step to protect them from exploitation, like this.
