Port Blair, Oct 25: The Chairperson, South Andaman Zilla Parishad, Mr Subir Chander who alongwith the Member of Parliament, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr Kuldeep Rai Sharma recently visited the Great Nicobar Island has highlighted several issues of the island to the Lt Governor of the islands while submitting a letter to his office.
In his letter addressed to the Lt Governor, Mr Subir Chander highlighted several issues on Great Nicobar. Regarding poor condition of existing STS buses and shortage of STS buses, he pointed out that only small chassis buses are running in Campbell Bay Island which is in very bad condition. Many buses do not have seats at all (particularly the buses plying to Govind Nagar). “Passengers have to sit in buses with their Umbrella opened due to heavy leakage in the roof of buses,” said Mr Subir Chader.
He further stated that due to lack of transportation facility of vegetables, vegetable vendors use buses for their vegetable transportation and as the buses are seat-less the school children are left with no other option but to sit upon these vegetables and go to school that ultimately spoils their school uniform particularly their white uniform.
Mr Subir Chander also felt the need of suggesting the Lt Governor to start the quarry operations in the region by handing it over to the PRIs. He said due to non operations of quarry in the area developmental works have been held up in Campbell Bay. “Even domestic works of the local people have been stalled,” Mr he stated.
Mr Subir Chander further in his letter said that if quarterly visit of all the HoDs of concerned department to Great Nicobar is made mandatory, then every quarterly most of the basic issues will be resolved in the area and thus, he demanded the Lt Governor to instruct the administration to do the needful. Mr. Subir Chander had also highlighted the issue of Shortage of teachers in Great Nicobar region.
