Port Blair, July 29: Hundreds of youths today staged protest at Tiranga Park, Port Blair against disengagement of workers of Electricity Department, who have been working in the department since last 7 to 8 years on Mandays basis.
Most of the workers were removed since July 01, 2019 and they have been told that they will be replaced by APWD DRM staffs.
Many alleged that they did not receive salary since last nearly four months.
“Such sudden decision of Administration will bring many families to road and drive many to extreme poverty. We performed our high risk duties to the level of extreme satisfaction of our superior and removing us in such a manner is not justified,” said a worker in the protest.
Workers alleged that they do not wish to be hired by other department as mazdoors as they are skilled in the departmental work of Electricity Department and they wish to continue in the same department.
“The present protest is only for three days after which we might go for hunger strike,” said another protesting youth.
