Port Blair, Aug 12: Stray animal menace is looming large in various pockets of Port Blair city. A large numbers of pigs freely roam on the roads in Prem Nagar and Delanipur areas and controlling this nuisance is the need of the hour. Though the authorities of the PBMC make tall claims of launching special drives to trap stray animals, and providing of facilities for rearing of Pigs at Brookshabad area but the ground reality never changes. Pigs blocking roads is a common sight in Prem Nagar area. People allege that the civic authorities pay no attention to this problem.
“The problem of stray pig menace is getting worse. They enter inside our house with all dirt and germs. Because of stray pigs entire area looks filthy,” said a resident of Prem Nagar Basti.
Residents allege that those who are rearing pig inside city, are getting political support and hence no action is taken against them. Moreover, pig rearing has become a very lucrative business too.
“We are reeling under pig menace. Long back it was decided by PBMC that rearing of pig will only be undertaken from Brookshabad village then how come the pigs are roaming openly near the Delanipur and Prem Nagar areas?” questioned a shop owner of Delanipur.
