Port Blair, Aug 10: Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the President of Pradesh Congress Committee today raised the issue of poor living conditions prevailing inside District Jail, with the Chief Secretary of A & N Administration, Mr. Anand Prakash. He pointed out that the District Jail is overcrowded with convicts and under-trials.
Sharma added that due to over-crowding, inmates in the jail are facing lot of troubles in many ways. He also pointed out that the local prisoners have to share the rooms with the foreign convicts, who have many serious infectious deceases.
“Life style of foreign convicts, differ from the Indians which again causes a lot of inconvenience to local prisoners,” Mr. Sharma told the Chief Secretary.
Later in a press release, Mr Sharma said that the under trials and convicts have right to lead a healthy life and hence he has requested the Chief Secretary to keep all foreign poachers away from the local inmates.
The Chief Secretary has reportedly assured that he will take immediate action to keep the poachers and local inmates in separate areas and also to increase the capacity of the District Jail soon.
