Port Blair, Dec 30: The Director General of Police Mr. Depender Pathak launched the newly formed Counter Assault unit- Parakram of Andaman & Nicobar Police.
On the eve of 30th December celebration and proposed visit of VVIP to Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the DGP, A&N Islands flagged off, five vehicles with trained commandos from Netaji Statue at Marina Park. The Parakram unit consists of well-equipped vans with counter assault NSG trained commandoes. The unit is tasked to handle anti-terror activities in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Due to remoteness of this island it is difficult to mobilise the force and fire power in the time of contingency. The critical time to counter any untoward incident is important to minimise or prevent the damage to life & property. Andaman and Nicobar Islands being a major tourist destination this kind of unit was required.
Parakram will ensure self-reliance in terms of trained combat team to counter terrorist attack or any crises situation. These vans will be stationed at important locations in Port Blair. Residents & tourists of A&N Islands will be assured of preparedness of A&N Police for counter assault. The Parakram Commandos are equipped with Baton, Stun Gun with light, Pepper Spray, tactical knee pad, tactical elbow pad, tactical belt, tactical vest, goggles day & night, hand glows, body worn cameras etc. The Parakram personnel were trained in Commando course at NSG 27 Special Composite Group (SCG), Chennai from 09-24 December 2018. They were trained in room intervention, approaching the target, quick counter assault, rappling, slithering & explosive detection.
