Port Blair, Dec 06: Perhaps for the first time in Andaman history on the Island a Protest is been staged by specially-abled people to press their demands, in front of Social Welfare Department, Golghar.
The protest which started yesterday continued today and is being spearheaded by a NGO called Sahara, which is an NGO fighting for the cause of specially abled people for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Mr.Sanjay Meshack from Aam Admi Party, President of Sahara Mrs. Suchitra Roy, General Secretary, Sahara, Mr.Biswajeet Mistry, Mr.Azizur Rehman of State General Secretary of A&N Islands Telugu Desam Party with Protima Banarjee, Senior Vice Chairperson PBMC and Ward Councillor, Mr. Someshwara Rao of Bharitya Janta Party, Chairperson of Sub-Committee for Education and Social Justice Municipal Corporation, Ward Councilor and Bindya Banerjee a Social worker were also present during the protest.
The demands raised by Sahara are Immediate replacement of the in charge of the V.R.C at Brooksabad; Replacement of Nodal Officer (Disabilities); Independent Commissioner for Persons With Disabilities, With discretionary powers (as per RPwD Act 2016), Separate Handicapped office/Section in the 1st floor of Directorate Social Welfare Building; Supply of modified shoes to the orthopedically disabled persons, Providing basic amenities & facilities like Drinking water, Transportation facilities, Care Takers, Clinical Psychologist, Speech Therapist; Posting of Registered professionals Vocational training Materials at Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, at Brooksabad, Port Blair; Maintenance of Electrical items; counseling session for Parents & Teachers; Establishment of special school for Divyang persons in A&N Island; Opening of Registration centre for issue of UDID (Unique Disability Identity); Implementation of separate transfer policy for Divyang employees as per Right of Persons with Disabilities Act’2016; Providing Stay home for inter Island Divyang persons in Port Blair and Providing 4% reservation in Government Jobs.
While talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr.Sanjay Meshack of Aam Admi Party Convener and ward councilor, PBMC said the protest will be continued until the demands are fulfilled.
