Port Blair, July 26: Indian Coast Guard, in pursuit of reaching out to the fishing community and continuing effort to strengthen coastal security mechanism organised a community interaction at Rangat on 26 Jul 12. The event was conducted by Indian Coast Guard Ship Durgabai Deshmukh and was attended by 50 fishermen from Nimbutala Village at Rangat. The function was presided over by Mr. Manoj Biswas, Village Pradhan, Nimbutala and was also attended by Mr. Michael Tirkey, representative of the Fisheries Department.
Live demonstration and practical training in handling Distress Alert Transmitters (DATs) and Search & Rescue Transponder (SART) was the highlight of the community interaction programme. Team of specialists from ICGS Durgabai Deshmukh demonstrated various useful techniques of survival at sea, first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation. Further, Asst Comdt Varun Rajput, the Navigating Officer of ICGS Durgabai Deshmukh provided valuable information regarding the Search & Rescue (SAR) organisation in the Andaman and Nicobar. He also appealed to the fishing community to undertake group fishing and be partners in coastal security by reporting suspicious activities at sea by fastest available means.
