Port Blair, Nov. 06: In a letter to the Lt. Governor, Ebrahim N Jadwet, an islander now based in Canada has requested the LG to consider the names of news islands discovered in the name of the stalwarts of the islands who have left a mark in the history of A&N Islands.
Congratulating the efforts of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, especially the Art and Culture Department, for inviting suggestion from the general public for naming twenty unnamed islands of this archipelago, Jadwet noted that it is a perfect initiative where common citizens can participate in the naming process by sharing their ideas.
Since the beginning of civilization in these islands, there have been many islands and prominent places that have been named after great personalities. Many places have been named after British officers before 1947 and after 1947 many places were named after great leaders of the Indian freedom struggle. As an islander I am truly blessed to associate many places after these great stalwarts, he wrote.
Ebrahim drew the attention of the LG to some great local stalwarts of these islands that played an important role in the modern history of these islands. ‘’As many young islanders of my age group have not even heard the names of these great stalwarts, I am afraid that in coming years, there will be a time when their names will gradually disappear”, he said.
“Even if the names are not considered for any reason, it will be great if the Administration could recognize and honor these names somewhere else so that their legacy continues”, Jadwet expressed while sharing a list of the names with a brief bio along with his letter.
