Port Blair, July 20: The Director General of Police Mr. S B Deol today rubbished some recent media reports, which said that A & N Islands are second in Crime Against Children.
“It has been mentioned that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is ranked second in terms of Crime Against Children with 20.3%. In this connection it is stated that while calculating the crime rate against children, the National Crime Record Bureau has used the total crime figures (77 cases) including 46 accident cases where the victims were children (under 18 years of age). However it has been clarified that these accident cases are not to be included for calculating the rate of crime against children,” the DGP said in a press release today.
He added that after deleting the 46 cases of accidents from the figure of 77, the crime rate percentage for Andaman and Nicobar would come down to 8.16% (31+3.80 lakh population=8.16%), which would be vastly less than what has been projected in the earlier report.
“This matter has been clarified and taken up with the NCRB to correct the figures before they publish the Annual Crime Data for the year 2011,” the DGP mentioned.
