Port Blair, Sept 20: Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) organized an Orientation and Capacity Building workshop on Prevention and Control of HIV & AIDS for youth for the students of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) on 19.09.2018 at Seminal Hall of JNRM. More than 70 students participated from the Department of Home Science. The workshop was an initiative for the formation of Red Ribbon Club (RRC) for the first year students.
The Red Ribbon Club is a movement by the Government of India, targeting Youth who are in the age group of 15-29 years. It is a voluntary on-campus intervention programme for students.
The objective for the formation of club is to equip the youth with correct information on HIV/AIDS; encourage them to learn safe and healthy lifestyles; promote voluntary blood donation; build their capacities as peer educators in spreading messages on positive health behavior; encourage care, concern and support for people living with HIV.
Principal JNRM Dr. N. Francis Xavier, Principal, and Project Director ANACS Dr. M. Joy graced the occasion. Dr. N. Francis Xavier motivated and encouraged the youth to enroll and actively participate in the club activities.
Dr. M. Joy informed the student how to utilize the platform of RRC to get information on various aspects of HIV & AIDS and its related issues. He also briefed on the harmful effects of addiction namely alcoholism and drugs & substance abuse.
Dr. Jahanara Yasmeen, Deputy Director IEC, ANACS gave information on the objectives of the formation of RRC and the activities to be continued under the club. They were also given information on HIV & AIDS through power point presentation.
Other faculty members Mrs Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor; Mrs Rekha Kumari and Mrs Nitika Garabia from Department of Home Science JNRM were also present for the workshop.
Mr. Shri Venkatesan, Assistant Professor & Head of the Dept. of Home Science, coordinated the whole programme. He concluded by proposing vote of thanks.
