Port Blair, August 14: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are all set to celebrate 72nd Independence Day in a grand manner. The main function will be held at historic Netaji Stadium. Other than this Independence Day will be celebrated by every government organizations and all prominent private firms.
Here in his official greetings the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral (Retd.) D K Joshi urged Islanders to come forward and drawing inspiration from the sacrifices and struggles of our great leaders.
“A&N Islands have played an important role in the Independence struggle. The Islands are witness to the struggles and sacrifices made by many of our freedom fighters since their arrival in 1858. The tri-color was hoisted for the first time on the soil of A&N Islands by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose on 30th December 1943,” the LG added.
Meanwhile, Doordarshan as a Public Broadcaster will be covering the entire Independence Day Celebration of the Islands at Netaji Stadium on 15.08.2018. Various programme and events will be telecast by Doordarshan in connection with the 72nd Independence Day celebration on DD Port Blair Channel. Independence Day Message by the Lt. Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands will be telecast on 15/08/2018 at 9.00 am and a TV Report on Independence Day Celebrations in Port Blair will be telecast on 15/08//2018 at 5.00 pm. And also as special occasion evening transmission will be started from 3.00 pm to 7.00 pm in Doordarshan, Port Blair.
As part of the 72nd Independence Day celebrations in these islands Andaman & Nicobar Islands, ships of Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Directorate of Shipping Services will be illuminated from sunset to 10 pm on August 15. Three Naval ships and two ships each of Coast Guard and DSS will participate in this joint illumination exercise between Marina Park and Ross Island. Colourful flares would also be fired from these ships during the ID parade and at sunset.
