Port Blair, May 01: A few private doctors are treating more than a dozen children, below five year, who are brought to hospital with complaints like vomiting and loose motion.
According a local Doctor, probably the use of carbide in ripening of fruit is the main reason behind this problem, as most of the children coming to hospital, have one thing in common, which is consumption of fruits, purchased from fruit vendors.
“I purchased mango from Chakkargon fruit vendor and since my child consumed the mango, she is continuous loose motion and vomiting. My doctor has advised me avoid fruits which are purchased from local market,” said a lady from New Pahargaon area.
Local media had reported about rampant use of Carbide by some people for ripening of fruits but the Food Safety Department has till now failed to catch those who are using carbide for this purpose in massive level.
As this matter is related to children the Administration must act now and conduct thorough check in this regard and punish the culprits, who are mixing poisons in fruits.
