Car Nicobar, May 22: The 108 feet long Bailey Bridge in over Kimious Nallah of Car Nicobar Islands has collapsed nearly one week back. The bridge was not in use since past nearly two years, considering horrible condition and lack of maintenance.
The Bailey bridge was constructed soon after Tsunami, in place of, a portion of, washed away full circle coastal road but many believe such expensive bridge was not required in the remote area.
Some people who are living on the other side of the bridge have an alternative road, it is reported.
The bridge was inaugurated by former Chief Secretary Mr. Shakti Sinha on 8th December 2011 but sadly it did not give service to public even for five years, after the inauguration.
As per villagers nearly one week back the central portion of the bridge collapsed and dropped below the sea level, leaving the bridge in ‘V’ shape.
Sources said that the bridge was in such a bad shape due to lack of maintenance, the authorities of Car Nicobar had seal the entry inside the bridge, to restrict movement of public or cattle on the bridge, even by mistake.
Now many question that why such long bridge was required in a remote Island, where there are not many users and if even it was required, then why the bridge was not maintained properly? Will the Administration look into this matter and question the concerned department?
