
Port Blair, Feb.18: About 13,000 sportspersons participated in the ‘Thomas Cook Andaman Marathon-2018’, the mega event of the Islands, which was conducted here today. The Lt. Governor, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) flagged off the race from the historic Cellular Jail, in the presence of Mr. Rahul Bose, the Brand Ambassador of the Marathon. The Chief Secretary, Mr. Anindo Majumdar and the President, Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Mr. Girish Arora were among others who graced the occasion.
Later, giving away cash prizes and trophies to the winners of the Marathon at the Netaji Stadium here this morning, the Lt. Governor congratulated them for the achievement. The huge number of the participants speaks volumes of the magnitude of the event, which is now an annual mega event of the Islands, he said and complimented the organizers for the successful conduct of the event.
Praising Mr. Rahul Bose, the Brand Ambassador of the event, the Lt. Governor recalled how he came across the actor while the latter was planning his rehabilitation trip to the Islands after the 2004 tsunami. He said that it was a tough time with no transportation available, but Rahul’s strong will and philanthropist nature made him land here and visit all the affected Islands, braving all odds to see the tsunami impact and provide relief materials to the affected people. The Lt Governor expressed hope that Mr. Bose will take part in the various projects and schemes that are coming up in the Islands.
Mr. Rahul Bose, while speaking on the occasion informed how he landed up in the Islands for the first time, on 30th December 2004, just four days after the tsunami, how he visited the affected areas in the Islands and selected 6 students for further studies in the mainland under his care. He proudly announced that the first Graduate in fashion designing from the Islands, of the six students sponsored by him, will be a tribal girl. He said, during his 42 trips to the Islands after the tsunami, he has witnessed a great transformation here. He praised the Islanders who, despite hailing from diverse culture and different languages, live in perfect harmony.
Proposing vote of thanks, President, ACCI Mr. Girish Arora thanked all the sponsors, Departments of the A&N Administration and all the members of the ACCI for their support in the smooth conduct of the Marathon-2018.
