Port Blair, 24 January 2018: The CITU has demanded appropriate action in the matter against all the officials involved in the inhuman and illegal act which led to the death of one pensioner who served APWD for about 40 years.
Drawing the attention of the Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, through a letter, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU, A & N State Committee mentioned that Madan Mohan Das, M.L. Driver attached to the APWD Division in Diglipur retired from service on 31st March, 2017.
“Since his pension case was not settled even after ten months of his retirement his pay was drastically reduced citing a wrong fixation made by the department way back in 1980s, Madan Mohan Das was deeply disappointed and due to mental tension and agony he was admitted to CHC Diglipur after he sustained brain haemerrage. Though shifted to GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair and admitted in the ICU, he could not be saved and he died on 22.01.2018 at 1 a.m. As he had not received any pension benefit, his family members could not take him to mainland for specialized medical treatment. His death has evoked anger and unrest among the workers and CITU activists in Diglipur,” Mr. Chandrachoodan said.
Mr. Chandrachoodan mentioned that the pensioner had died due to the insensitive and callous attitude of the Executive Engineer, APWD Diglipur and PAO, Rangat Finance Department, CITU requests general secretary to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the officers concerned for their failure to settle the pension case and for deducting the pension through refixation of pay and recovery of wrongly fixed pay despite the clear instruction of the Govt. of India on the basis of Supreme Court order not to recover any amount wrongly paid to an employee, after his retirement.
He also mentioned that, if no action is taken against them, it will tantamount to human rights violation and the CITU will be compelled to seek legal action against all the officials involved besides conducting agitation.
