I am happy to learn that 16th November is being observed as the ‘National Press Day’ in the Islands together with the rest of the country. A free and responsible press is essential in a democratic set up and plays a vital role. This was the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the Press maintain the high standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by influences or threats and any extraneous factors. The deliberation this year will focus on the theme “Challenges Before the Media”.I am happy to learn that 16th November is being observed as the ‘National Press Day’ in the Islands together with the rest of the country. The media can play a catalytic role to usher in all-round development in a democracy, but only when it maintains objective journalistic ethics and highest professional standards.
On the occasion of National Press Day, I extend my best wishes to all press/media persons for their contributions to journalism. I also call upon them to contribute towards the development of our Islands and society through fair and balanced reporting.
