Port Blair, Nov 09: Continuous burning of Garbage at Garbage dumping yard close to Corbyn’s Cove is leaving thick layer of smoke in the entire Corbyn’s Cove area, posing serious health risk for local residents and also visiting tourists.
Besides causing health issues, serious air pollution the garbage dumping site is also causing visual pollution as the entire area has now become an eye sore. The garbage dumping site looks like an active volcano spewing deadly gasses, day in and day out
For visiting tourists the Corbyn’s Cove area is fast losing its charm and tourists are often found complaining about the smoke, whenever the wind changes direction towards the beach.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha the former Chairperson of PBMC and present Councillor of PBMC Mr. K Ganeshan today said that during the tenure of Lt. Gen (Retd.) A K Singh a separate land was allotted for dumping yard so that the area close to beach could be saved for other purposes but for various reasons the land could not be used and even today garbage is dumped and burnt close to sea, causing sea and air pollution.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Mohd. Rafique, a Social Worker demanded that the PBMC must act now to shift the garbage dumping area before resident of area pick up some deadly skin and respiratory disease.
However even after repeated attempts the newly elected Chairperson of PBMC was unavailable for a comment in this regard, which clearly shows how much serious the new PBMC Chairperson is towards the problem of public.
Hope the PBMC will wake up from deep slumber before an ecological and health disaster because of this garbage dumping yard.
