Port Blair, Oct 27: Dr. P. Vijayachari, Director, RMRC (ICMR) has been invited by the Regional Director, World Health Organization (WHO), Regional Office for South East Asia, New Delhi to participate as an Expert in the ‘National Workshop on Leptospirosis’ followed by ‘Global Leptospirosis Environmental Action Network (GLEAN) meeting’ which are scheduled to be organized at Kathmandu, Nepal from 30th Oct 2017 – 1st Nov 2017. The Epidemiology and Diseases Control Division (EDCD) and National Public Health Laboratory, Ministry of Health, Nepal with the support of WHO-SEARO will be organizing these meetings. During the meetings, Dr. Vijayachari shall be delivering talks on (1) Lessons learnt from Leptospirosis outbreaks in India. (2) Development and validation of leptospirosis diagnostic kits (3) An overview of leptospirosis surveillance in India.
Several international experts from different parts of the world are participating in the meeting. There would be discussions on different topics on global, regional and national epidemiological situation, Leptospirosis outbreak management, diagnostic test development, surveillance systems and GLEAN management wherein Dr. Vijayachari will share his insights among the GLEAN members and regional experts on prevailing situation of leptospirosis by defining priority activities and expected deliverables for the upcoming years which would enable the WHO for developing strategies for prevention and control of leptospirosis different parts of the world.
Earlier, on the request of WHO-SEARO and Director, National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), Kathmandu, Nepal, Dr.Vijayachari had visited NPHL in January 2014 and provided technical assistance by conducting training workshop on leptospirosis, facilitating towards strengthening the Leptospira Reference Laboratory in Nepal.
