Port Blair, Oct 18: World Standards Day was celebrated by Andaman & Nicobar State Centre (ANSC) of The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) in association with APWD & Police Department on Tuesday, 17 October, 2017 at 3.30 pm at ALHW Conference Hall by organizing Technical Lectures on the theme – “Standards make Cities Smarter”.
Architect from APWD, B. V. Krishna Narayan Rao, Planning Assistant, T & CP Unit, made exhaustive presentations on one of the Macro content of the Theme i.e. Smart Buildings & Homes – Security Solutions and Energy Efficiency. While Officer Arjun Prasad, Inspector of Police, Traffic Branch explained on Smart Traffic – Reduce Traffic and detect accidents while dwelling on Basic Traffic Safety, Rules & History of gamut of activities under the Traffic branch.
Earlier, Chairman, ANSC, IEI, Er. D. Sathyamoorthy, FIE, Deputy Chief Engineer (Mech.), ALHW welcomed the Engineering Fraternity and others present and exhorted the gathering to have a fruitful discussion on the theme of the Day.
During the Interactive session, Past Chairman, ANSC, IEI, Er. Manohar Singh, FIE, Retired SE, Electricity Department enquired about whether Smart Homes & Buildings have any particular norms of plinth area and whether such projects are being implemented in India. Ar. Rao informed that many such projects are ongoing in mainland in many major cities in both Home & Building sectors while there was a total absence of such projects in A & N Islands.
The Police Department presenter Inspector Prasad was showered with the Departments take on traffic offenders and their contribution towards a Smart Traffic System Management. Inspector Prasad, informed that in the first phase towards modernization of Traffic in Port Blair city, CCTV cameras have been installed in one location and 2 more are being planned in the city to streamline the traffic system and also to identify the traffic offenders. Moreover there are plans of bringing in e Challan system which will be helpful in challaning without disturbing the flow of regular traffic. Free Left though does not exist in law has been allowed at junctions to decongest traffic but it should be taken with responsibility, he added.
This apart, Er. M. Balamurugan, MIE, Past Hon. Secretary of ANSC, IEI & T & C P, APWD, Er. Usha Stephen, Immediate Past Hon. Secretary of ANSC, IEI and EE, APWD also participated in the interactions. A large number of Engineers from various departments were part of the proceedings.
