Port Blair, Oct 16: The NGO Butterflies organized an Awareness Campaign on International Girl Child Day at Little Andaman with the purpose of creating awareness among children and general public on empowering adolescence girls. The Campaign consisted of various programmes like session on Self- Defense, Thematic rally/ dances, games and competitions and Nukkad Natak on girl child issues. Total 160 children from different villages of Little Andaman participated in campaign and disseminated message of need for empowering girl child and gender equality in society. This programmes was supported by CIAI (for all the children of the world), Italy, Department of Police and Panchayats.
The program was inaugurated by Mr. Udit Prakash Rai, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman and Special guest was Mr. Arun Kumar Jha, Asst. Commissioner, Tribal welfare. The other dignitaries presented on the occasion were Mr. F. Joseph, Tehasildar, Mr. Saravanan- SHO, Smt. Geeta Rao, Pradhan Hut Bay panchayat, Mr. Babul Sarkar, Pradhan, Netaji Nagar, Mr. Vasu Nair, Zilla Parishad member, Mr. Sino P. Kurian, Program manager of Butterflies and Smt. Nishi, President, CGWWA, Hut Bay station. All the guest interacted with children and highlighted the need for girl child empowerment. Post lunch, a session was organized on Self- Defense with demo by Mr. Saravanan, SHO, Hut Bay and police constables Ms. Gita Rani and Eileen. The event came to an end with vote of thanks by Ms. Ganga Bhavani, Field Coordinator.
