Port Blair, June 26: It’s a long wait for Government Servants who are supposed to get government quarters under government pool quota. Government servants allege that under general pool quota one has to wait for years and years, while those government servants, who have their own departmental quarters, get government accommodation in no time.
“Departments having their own quarters, issue accommodation for their staffs as early as possible but in government pool we have to wait for several years. Thus some government servant who are juniors get government quarters early while some of them have to wait for a long long time,” said a government servant who does not want his name to be quoted.
Many believe that if specific quota of quarters is allotted for different departments as per the strength of staffs, from the general pool, then the changes of getting quarter will increase manifold for senior and deserving government servants, whose name otherwise always remain somewhere down the list.
When contacted the Assistant Secretary (GA) said that it is not possible to allot specific quota or quarters for all departments.
“Strength of some departments is too high and it is not possible to allot them that many number of quarters and that is why we have General Pool. Here we allot quarters as per date of appointment i.e seniority basis,” Mr. A Joseph, Assistant Secretary (GA) told Andaman Sheekha.
However, he clarified that no one has to wait for decades for a government quarter in these Islands. “Every year we issue forms for quarter allotment in July and based on seniority we allot quarters.
