Port Blair, Oct 04: Defence Wives Welfare Association, Port Blair has been given the National Award for their innovative way of zero waste management system. The award was received by Mrs Seema Verma, President DWWA on 2nd Oct 17 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi at a function to commemorate 3rd anniversary of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ on the conclusion of ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ fortnight. The project was chosen for its innovative way of dealing with garbage. It was started by DWWA in Sep 16 to not only minimize the waste being disposed off to the municipality, but also to ensure that recyclable waste is disposed properly. DWWA runs segregated waste collection centre at different locations in Haddo, Junglighat, Minnie Bay and Brichgunj. They collect segregated waste from more than 10000 residents and recycle it. More than 3 ton of compost is produced every month, and around 3 ton of empty tetrapack has been sent to mainland for recycling, to be converted into corrugated sheets and furniture.
The waste being given to PBMC has come down to less than one truck per day from around 12 trucks earlier. DWWA intends to conduct waste management workshops for various sections of the society in Port Blair and is ready to offer its facilities and consultancy as part of its social outreach programme.
